1. God Wills It!
2. The Second Crusade, 1147-1149. King Louis of France
3. 6 months
4. a)To provide safe travel routes for pilgrims from Europe to the Holy Land, which led to the formation of the Templar Knights (guarding the Temple Mount) in 1118)
b) To put an end to fighting among land owners and fuedal kings in Europe, to fight a common enemy, the “infidels” in Palestine and area
These two are merely two of the given reasons. In actuality, there were as many reasons as there were people who went on a Crusade!
5) Up for debate. He was a good warrior, but not so good as a stay-at-home king. He lived mainly in France and was only rarely in England.
6) The Battle of Hattin in July 1187 was a battle in Galilee for Palestine between the forces of Saladin and the Crusading armies. Saladin won a stunning victory and many Europeans were killed or captured. This was a horrible blow to the cause of freeing the Holy Lands from Arab control. Once again the Arabs ruled the country, from Jerusalem to the northern part of Galilee.
7) Many reasons are given, depending on which side you stand. Still today historians take either one of two sides: the Roman Catholic view that the Venetians wanted to conquer Constantinople for economic reasons, and the Italian view that the attack was purely innocent and “happened” sort of by accident. I myself tend toward the view that the doge of Venice, Dandolo, had a vendetta against the Byzantium Greeks in Constantinople and wanted to conquer the city so he would have complete control over the shipping lanes in the Med. Sea.
